Marcia Liu & Klaas Boelen – GINCUBATOR 2023-2024

3 July, 2023 garage29 GINCUBATOR

As movement and performance practitioner, Marcia Liu has recently drawn into the study of the ancient knowledge of body and movement in Chinese martial arts. She is fascinated by the principle of conservation and recycle capacity of energy in this arts. At the moment she is practicing the “internals” of Chinese martial arts and qigong which opens up to embodiment and movement employing the deep fascia and connective tissues in the body. She questions how can we move more powerfully but at the same time more kindly; how can we direct or redirect the others, without using violence (brute force), nor without losing our own ground? Marcia explores creatively how these questions can inform the performing bodies, interact and transform the performance landscapes — the co-presence of bodies in space-time.

Image and sound explorer, Klaas Boelen, creates live cinema where audiovisuals experience can be generated by composition and improvisation of found objects, footages and (sound) recordings. The interaction and tension between live and documentary, theatre and cinema, live performance and audiovisual captures, staged act and real life — are at the heart of Klaas’ artistic expedition. In the residency he would like to open up this creation process to other media such as moving bodies and moving objects.

08>21.04.2024 : Open Residency

Marcia and Klaas feel the need to involve the public in their creative process, calling upon its reactivity and spontaneity. The artists want to receive the audience in different ways, and test a  few systems around the relationship between dance and cinema.

Between the 15th and 21st of April 2024, during their residency and after a first week of work between themselves, they will open the experience to others. The exact dates and hours will be announced later on during the season.

Vladimir Babinchuk & Eleni Roberts Kazouri – GINCUBATOR 2023-2024

2 July, 2023 garage29 GINCUBATOR

FR/AN

Vladimir Babinchuk (b.2001, FR) from Portuguese and Ukrainian origins, is a dancer, performer and maker based in Brussels, Belgium. At the age of 18, began a B.A. in Dance and Performing Arts at P.A.R.T.S, of which he graduated in 2022. Vladimir’s work is framed within the practice of nurturing care for one’s body while breaking it apart on the digital level. His research of it has been nurtured by working in contact with the themes of land, soil and its symbiosis with technology. He has previously collaborated with Tamara Cubas in ‘Offering For a Monster’, and has been part of Miet Warlop’s work, “After All Springville”, in the role of the giant. Vladimir has had the opportunity to spend a month in PRISMA, Lisbon (PT), in the context of a residency program, presenting ‘good evening, friends. i’m a vampire’, a work that treats the issue of love within ultra-liberal societies by uncovering ancestral traumas caused by the church.

Eleni Roberts Kazouri (GR, 1998) is a dance performer based currently between Brussels and Athens. At the age of 21, Eleni moved to Brussels to attend the school for dance and performing arts, P.A.R.T.S., and since 2022 she has been a freelancer. During her studies she focused on the development of her own movement, experimenting with diverse improvisational tools and ways of moving through space. She’s intrigued by the different qualities that the human body can manifest, and gets inspiration by music and sounds, in relation to body movement. Eleni has performed in festivals, such as KDF, EXiiiT Festival, and Festival Artonov (2022), creating her own work, participating in different projects, repertories, and creations. She performed the piece “Offering for a Monster” by Tamara Cubas, and since 2020 she has been performing the piece “FLIES”, by Renato Miskolczi, that has been presented, among other places, in WIELS, KANAL-Centre Pompidou Bruxelles and DeSignel, in Antwerp. At the moment, she is part of the new creation ‘Tempo Rubato’ of Tipperary Dance Company, by Alexandre Iseli, which will be toured in Ireland and Tenerife in 2023.

AGENDA

15>19.01.2024 : Workshop

Eleni and Vlad chose to start their research inviting others to two periods of work-shop, creating a collective time for exchange, exploration, learning, spatial practice, moving and reading in order to create reflective tools that will help the growth of this project.

They wish to welcome any kind of bodies and their personal narratives to come in exchange, placing themselves as mediators of a line of thoughts and ideas, they believe opened enough to allow a diverse and plural work to happen.

Vladimir Babinchuk & Eleni Roberts Kazouri – GINCUBATOR 2023-2024

FR/AN

Anna Kuch – GINCUBATOR 2023-2024

28 June, 2023 garage29 GINCUBATOR

Anna Kuch works between Hamburg, Brussels and Zurich as choreographer, dancer, pedagogue, puppeteer and actress. In her work she combines the political and the poetic, greatly influenced by poetic, philosophic or scientific texts and research. She aims to liquefy the sovereignity of the mind over the body, and conceives her work as a place of resistance and undoing, a place where norms of thought and perception can be questioned and changed. Her solo works deal with violent nationalism, collective heritage and normalised forms of communication. Slapstick and the inherent tragic and absurd comedy of the human condition inspire her work.

She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Physical Theatre with honours from the Accademia Teatro Dimitri, Switzerland (with the support of Ernst Göhner Stiftung). Her final thesis “The Sausages of Truth” received several awards. Further she holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts from the Institut Supérieur des Arts et Chorégraphies, Académie Royale, Brussels.

As a maker, she co-founded the company MÜLLER&KUCH with the dancer and choreographer Angie Müller (supported by Kulturförderung Kanton und Stadt Schaffhausen and Rhybadi Schaffhausen). The tension of their work comes from the deliberate incorporation of unpredictable elements. They toured with two pieces: “Das sagst du immer.” and “Das ist Wahnsinn, du spielst mit meinen Gefühlen.” She also creates masks and objects for several dance and theatre productions, and did the music for the show “Die Bedingte Welt”.

In 2020 she started the artistic research project ‘Performative Archiving / Women* in German Colonial History in Namibia’ with Ewe Benbenek, Nesindano Namises and Meera Theunert (with the support of flausen+ scholarship by the German government). The work is currently being continued digitally as ‘Archiving Immaterialities’. Further she is engaged in an ongoing research about instant creation, developing skills for movement, sound and theatre improvisation on stage with EnsembleSolo, a group of performers, dancers and musicians based in Switzerland.

As a performer and narrator, Anna worked with Meera Theunert, Cathrin Jarema for the Werkschau Zürich, Afsaneh Salari, Project Detachment. and Tianyu Gu, amongst others.

Currently she develops her own choreographic work, holding a research grant from the German government whilst engaging in a Fighting Monkey mentorship. She is also active in the field of performance and dance through dramaturgical support and clown coaching for works in creation.

At Garage29 Anna will be developing her new creation A generous cushion for my aggression (working title).

Urtė Groblytė/LOVEXTENDED – GINCUBATOR 2023-2024

27 June, 2023 garage29 GINCUBATOR

Urtė Groblytė is a performer and maker from Lithuania residing in Brussels, Belgium. Her work explores the moments and body states of being on edge, in contact with danger, risk, high intensity, and saturated effort, which requires high presence, listening, and negotiations of strength. Moments of self-loss, and therefore being with the others through negotiation of this sensation. The attentiveness to the pain and the body’s limits is an underlying philosophy and practice behind the different creations she made. The use of objects is an important part of her work as well. They extend, transform, extract from or restrict the body. Most of the time her creations start from the memory of a situation or experience. She wants to “transform the fleeting moments of life into something graspable, something you can hold in your hands, so you don’t forget…” After graduating from a classical ballet school in Lithuania, she went to Folkwang University of Arts in Germany to study modern dance for a year, and after that joined the Training Cycle of P.A.R.T.S.(Performing Arts Research and Training Studios) in Brussels, where she is continuing her Master studies (STUDIOS) at the moment. Next to her studies, she engages in the activities of the collective called LOVEXTENDED, which she was one of the initiators of.

LOVEXTENDED” is a performance collective that formed in 2022. A group met in Brussels during their dance studies and separated in different directions afterward. Now this city is a common ground where they wish to continue working and sharing their artistic practices and processes of creation. One of the first events they did together was three days of performances in Mercerie, Brussels, where they presented three different pieces. The people involved were: Philomene Jander, Ching-Shu Huang, Biret Haarla Pieski, Urtė Groblytė, Judith Dhondt, Victoria Roy, and Luis Miguel Ramirez Munoz.

For now, LOVEXTENDED is building a structure and new ideas for collaboration, one of them being “A LOVELY CONSTRUCTION SITE” (working title), which will be part of this year’s G.Incubator.

Sophie Melis – GINCUBATOR 2023-2024

27 June, 2023 garage29 GINCUBATOR

Lara Hugo Chanel + Juliette Yasmine Mello – GINCUBATOR 2023-2024

27 June, 2023 garage29 GINCUBATOR

Ensemble elles travaillent sur surely no other drifting will taste the same sweat, leur première collaboration artistique et chorégraphique.
