G.INCUBATOR - Residency formulas

FR/EN

THE G.INCUBATOR ( GARAGE29 INCUBATEUR ) IS A RESEARCH AND/OR CREATION RESIDENCY PROCESS DESIGNED FOR EMERGING ARTISTS WHO EXPLORE THE BEGINNINGS OF THEIR SCENIC PROPOSALS FOR 2 TO 4 WEEKS PER SEASON. G.IN FOCUSES ON THE ARTISTS’ PROJECTS, EXPLORED IN VARIOUS FORMS AND THROUGH ENCOUNTERS WITH OTHER ARTISTS, PERFORMING ARTS PROFESSIONALS, PLAYWRIGHTS AND AUDIENCES.
IN A BROADER SENSE, G.IN’S MISSION IS TO CREATE AND DEVELOP THE CONDITIONS FOR RESEARCH AND THE EMERGENCE OF SCENIC IDEAS BY CHALLENGING THE TRADITIONAL FRAMEWORK OF ARTISTIC RESIDENCY. AFTER ITS FIRST YEARS OF EXISTENCE, DURING WHICH VARIOUS FORMS OF RESIDENCY WERE TESTED, GARAGE29 NOW OFFERS HYBRID FORMULAS SUCH AS WRITING RESIDENCIES, WORKSHOP RESIDENCIESCO-RESIDENCIES, NEIGHBOUR’S RESIDENCIES OR OPEN RESIDENCIES WITH AN AUDIENCE, WHICH THE ARTISTS CHOOSE IN ORDER TO EXPLORE THREE MAIN ISSUES IN THEIR CREATION: THE RELATIONSHIP TO DRAMATURGY, TO SPACE AND TO THE AUDIENCE.
APPLICATIONS OPEN EACH YEAR IN JANUARY AND CLOSE AT THE END OF FEBRUARY. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA ARE: BELGIAN RESIDENCY, LESS THAN 3 CHOREOGRAPHIC WORKS. WHILE YOU’RE WAITING FOR APPLICATIONS TO OPEN, WE INVITE YOU TO BUILD UP YOUR DOSSIER BY TAKING A LOOK AT THE DIFFERENT RESIDENCY FORMULAS, AND CONSIDER WHICH ONES SEEM MOST APPROPRIATE FOR YOUR CREATION:

The writing residency (2 x 1 weeks)

The writing residency is a moment of brainstorming and questioning. A dramaturge (chosen in agreement with the artist) accompanies the latter in his or her progress through the dramaturgical questions of his or her project, the possible writings around his or her theme, the technical means necessary for its realization, the formats, etc.

The workshop residency (1 week)

The workshop residency  is a 1 or 2 weeks process where the choreographers working in the G.Incubator integrate the questions of their projects as well as their scenic vocabularies into a workshop format and intend to put to work the group and the diversity of its points of view while guiding the participants through a learning and experimenting process. According to the choreographer’s wishes and challenges, some workshops residencies culminate in the presentation of a form that emerges from the shared discoveries to a friendly gathered public. An opportunity to punctuate the experience for both choreographers and participants. The formula is aiming a win win situation where emerging choreographers have the possibility to work with other artists who experience a creation process, spend time within an artistic proposition, accumulate  knowledge and share their development. These workshops are free of charge for the participants! Find out more about the workshops offered each season HERE !

The co-residency (2 weeks)

The co-residency is a co-working, of two or more artists working on their individual projects at the same time in the studio. This formula proposes to observe how the atmosphere, the objects, the universe of a project influences the other project and vice versa, without trying to combine them and without any obligation of result but by letting oneself be contaminated by the difference of approaches and functioning of each one. The co-residency is a meeting between artistic disciplines and allows the choreographers to discover the universe of artists in plastic arts, textiles, literature, industry, etc.

Residency in the neighborhood (1 week)

The inhabitants of Schaerbeek welcome an artist in residence in their home. Workshops, back houses, gardens, sheds, garages, verandas, attics, living rooms, some neighbors have unusual spaces to offer to the artists who are invited to observe and multiply the dialogues with their future public from the beginning of their project. These residencies are the object of a collaboration with the Theatre 140.

The open residency (1 or 2 weeks, depending of the project)

How to welcome and involve the public in the creative process? We are looking for a formula of public presentation, which is not necessarily the final form of the show but where the public is brought to give a live feedback, calling upon its reactivity and spontaneity. In some cases, the aim of these residencies is to present a work in progress and invite targeted programmers and producers to discover the artist’s work.

The technical residency (1 week)

The residency offers G.IN choreographers the opportunity to carry out a technical residency in a brussels theater. The artists meet through this formula the technical team of the place, who makes itself available to help them experiment with the lighting and sound aspects of their project.
